What To Do in a Dental Emergency – Step by Step

When something goes wrong with your teeth, it’s easy to panic. Here’s a calm, clear plan to follow.

Step 1

Call Us First

Ring Bowral Street Dental Practice on (02) 4861 6576. Describe what has happened, and we will advise you on the next steps to take and book you an appointment as quickly as possible.

Step 2

Manage the Pain

Over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can help reduce pain and inflammation while you wait for your appointment. A cold pack applied to the outside of your jaw can also help with swelling. Do not place aspirin directly onto the tooth or gum.

Step 3

Handle a Knocked-Out Tooth with Care

If a tooth has been knocked out, pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. Rinse it gently with milk or saline — not tap water. Try to place it back in the socket if possible, or store it in milk or between your cheek and gum. Get to us within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

Step 4

Lost Filling or Crown

If you’ve lost a filling or crown, keep the area clean and avoid eating on that side. Dental cement from a pharmacy can be used as a temporary fix, but you should see us as soon as possible to prevent further damage or infection.

Step 5

Abscess or Swelling

Do not try to pop or drain an abscess yourself. Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water and call us straight away. Dental abscesses can spread quickly and need professional treatment.

Step 6

Come Into the Practice

We’ll take a digital X-ray to fully assess the problem, clearly discuss your treatment options, and begin relief as quickly as possible. Our calm, welcoming rooms are designed to keep you relaxed even when you’re in pain.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in a Dental Emergency

When you’re in pain, it’s easy to panic, react abruptly and make things worse. Here are the mistakes we see most often — and what to do instead.

Waiting Too Long

Many people hope the pain will go away on its own. Sometimes it does temporarily, but the underlying problem doesn’t. An untreated infection can spread. A cracked tooth can fracture further. Waiting often leads to more complex — and more expensive — treatment. If something doesn’t feel right, call us.

Using Aspirin Directly on the Tooth

Placing aspirin directly against the gum or tooth is a common home remedy that can actually cause chemical burns to the soft tissue. Use oral pain relievers as directed on the packet — taken by mouth, not applied topically.

Trying to Remove a Loose or Broken Fragment Yourself

It can be tempting to try to pull out a loose fragment or broken piece of tooth. Don’t! This risks damaging the surrounding tissue or pushing a crack further into the root. Leave it in place and call us.

Not Bringing the Knocked-Out Tooth

Many people don’t realise a knocked-out adult tooth can sometimes be successfully reimplanted — but time is everything. You have roughly 30 minutes for the best outcome. Keep the tooth moist (in milk, saline or your own saliva) and come straight to us.

Ignoring a Dental Abscess

An abscess is a bacterial infection that will not resolve without treatment. Left untreated, it can spread to your jaw, neck or — in severe cases — into deeper tissue. If you have a pimple-like swelling on your gum, facial swelling, or fever alongside tooth pain, call us straight away.

Going to a Hospital for Non-Life-Threatening Dental Pain

Hospital emergency departments can provide pain relief and prescribe antibiotics, but they are not set up to perform dental treatment. Your best outcome comes from seeing a dentist directly. Call our practice first to make an appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions – Emergency Dentist Bowral

Q: Do you see emergency patients on the same day?
Yes. We do our best to see patients with dental emergencies on the same day they call, particularly for situations involving significant pain, swelling, or injury. Call us as early in the day as possible on (02) 4861 6576 to secure an appointment.
We offer emergency appointments on Saturdays. Our practice is closed on Sundays. If you have an after-hours emergency outside of these times, please go to your nearest hospital emergency department for pain management until we can see you.
An emergency consultation typically ranges from $50 to $150 for the initial examination, with additional costs depending on what treatment is needed. We will always discuss costs with you before starting any treatment. We accept most major health funds and offer payment plans through My Smile Plan.
In some cases, yes — but time is critical. If an adult tooth is knocked out cleanly, keep it moist (in milk, saline or between your cheek and gum) and get to us within 30 minutes. The sooner we see you, the better the chance of reimplantation. Teeth that have been out of the mouth for longer or that are badly damaged may not be suitable candidates.
Call us straight away. Do not try to drain it yourself. Rinse gently with warm salt water for temporary comfort. An abscess is a bacterial infection that requires professional treatment — typically antibiotics and drainage, followed by treatment of the underlying cause, such as root canal therapy or extraction.
We completely understand. Dental anxiety is very common, and arriving in pain only makes it harder. Our team is trained to put nervous patients at ease. We offer sedation dentistry options for patients who need extra support. Please let us know when you call — we can talk you through what to expect before you arrive.
We are not a bulk billing practice. We do, however, accept the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) for eligible children aged 0–17. We are also registered with HCF, NIB and other major health funds, and offer payment plan options.
